Fratton Footbridge

Fratton Footbridge

Rail
CASE STUDY Fratton Footbridge (17A/10) spans six electrified tracks at Fratton Station, comprising three riveted steel plate girder spans on cast iron columns. The structure was assessed as overstressed, requiring Robert West to design strengthening and refurbishment works, and ensure compliance with Network Rail standards. An innovative U-frame solution was developed, integrating new U-frames into the concrete deck out-pans to provide lateral restraint to the top chords of the main girders. This approach significantly enhanced the structural performance by preventing buckling under load, thereby increasing the overall stability and capacity of the footbridge. By targeting the root cause of the deficiency, the solution eliminated the need for extensive strengthening or full girder replacement, reducing both construction time and material use. This not only ensured compliance with modern loading standards but also…
