THE BRIEFJubilee School in Maidstone, Kent is a one form entry primary school seeking to expand to two forms.  Planning permission had been declined on a number of grounds.  Robert West, having previously provided a Transport Assessment, were subsequently requested as Expert Witness during the Planning Inspectorate hearing.There were a number of constraints affecting the proposed school expansion – construction access/turning/parking, avoiding impact on a green field site and local residents, avoiding disruption to a recently constructed play area and safe access for pupils, staff and visitors during the construction period.VALUE-ADDED SOLUTIONOur team enjoyed working collaboratively with other stakeholders to unlock this tricky puzzle in an environment of mutual trust and to look beyond the obvious to identify creative solutions.Detailed analysis of highway and parking impacts, including parking surveys and…

THE BRIEF As part of the London Underground Digital Escalator Panel (DEP) Refresh project, Exterion Media are upgrading the current digital advertising panels with new, more energy efficient digital monitors and installing brand new continuous digital ‘Ribbon’ screens. These new screens run along the existing escalator incline at 25 different stations across the London Underground (LU) infrastructure. Our brief was to provide full design and assurance to LU process and requirements services for the Civils, Structural and Premises elements of the project from feasibility through detailed design and construction support. VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION During the early stages of each workstream (DEP or Ribbon), we worked closely with Telent to come up with the most effective solution for the structural support designs for the screens. THE BRIEF The Riverlinx Joint Venture was required to construct a new river wall along the north bank of the River Thames comprising a tied sheet pile intertidal wall; a precast concrete flood wall; and an intertidal terrace. The works provide 340m (out of approximately 1km of new flood defences) being constructed as part of the wider Silvertown Development Plan. The brief included requirements to prepare a design capable of construction from land-based plant within a range of site-specific constraints. A section of the wall passes over the new tunnel bores limiting penetration of piles; the wall needs to retain stability during the tunnel boring; flood defence levels need to be maintained at all stages of the construction; a design life of 120 years is required, and compliance is needed…

THE BRIEF Skylon Park is a 72-acre industrial and commercial development to promote economic growth in the area. It lies on former wartime munitions ‘brownfield land’ and named after the futuristic-looking slender, vertical structure that was fabricated in Hereford in 1951 for the Festival of Britain. THE BRIEFRobert West provided civil and structural engineering services for a prestigious residential development in the heart of Central London. The scheme comprised deepening of the existing basement to accommodate automatic parking and servicing requirements and 140 residential units over 10 floors.VALUE-ADDED SOLUTIONRobert West carried out extensive investigations of the existing diaphragm walls, which were incorporated into the new works to establish penetration, condition and reinforcement layout. FINAL OUTCOMESA construction sequence was developed and AIP submissions agreed with Westminster City Council.
